Deep Tissue & Sports Massage in Bangkok: Where Expats, Runners and Gym-Goers Go
Updated
Traditional Thai massage is wonderful, but it isn't the same as the deep tissue or sports massage many expats are used to at home. If you run, lift, play padel or sit at a desk all day, you may want a therapist who works specific muscles with oil and slow, firm pressure — and who knows some anatomy. Bangkok has a handful of places that specialise in exactly that.
Thai massage vs. deep tissue vs. sports massage
- Thai massage: done clothed on a mat, with acupressure along energy lines and assisted stretches. Great for overall stiffness and mobility.
- Deep tissue: oil massage on a bed with slow, firm strokes into specific muscle layers. Good for knots and chronic tightness.
- Sports massage: deep tissue with a training focus — before an event, after a race, or for recurring problem areas like calves, hamstrings, hips and shoulders.
Where to go
- Bangkok Sports Massage (Thonglor): a clinic focused on athletes and active people; its team is trained by physiotherapists or holds sports-science degrees. Fifty Fifth Plaza, 2nd floor, Thonglor Soi 2.
- Sakura Spa (Ekkamai): English-speaking therapists; published deep tissue prices of about ฿1,250 for 60 minutes, ฿1,500 for 90 and ฿2,500 for 120.
- Raku Spa: deep tissue / sports massage from about ฿1,590 for an hour, ฿1,990 for 90 minutes and ฿2,590 for two hours.
- Mainstream chains such as Health Land and Let's Relax: ask for an oil massage with strong pressure — cheaper, but less specialised.
How to get what you want
- Say where it hurts and what you train for — "right calf, half-marathon on Sunday" is more useful than "strong please".
- Before a race, keep it light; save the deep work for two or three days after.
- If pain is sharp, radiates or comes with numbness, see a physiotherapist or doctor rather than a masseur.
- Expect to pay more than for Thai massage: these are clinic and spa prices, roughly ฿1,250–2,600 depending on length.
Prices and addresses change; check with the clinic before you go. For a lighter recovery session after a run in Lumphini Park, see the massage places within walking distance of the park.
