How to Find a Legit Massage in Bangkok (and Avoid Dodgy Shops)
Updated
The vast majority of massage shops in Bangkok are exactly what they look like: places for a genuine Thai, foot or oil massage. A small number in nightlife areas offer something else. If you just want a proper massage — alone, as a couple or with family — a few simple signs make the difference obvious.
Signs of a legit massage shop
- A clear, printed price list with standard treatments: Thai massage, foot massage, oil, herbal compress.
- Bright, open shop fronts; therapists in uniforms, often sitting outside giving foot massages.
- Foot washing before the massage, and loose clothes provided for Thai massage.
- Therapists who ask about pressure and areas to avoid.
- Fair prices: roughly ฿250–700 per hour for Thai massage outside of spas.
Red flags
- Heavily made-up staff calling out to passers-by, darkened windows or no visible price list.
- Shops right next to nightlife strips such as Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza or Patpong.
- Talk of a very large 'tip' before or during the massage — a normal tip is about ฿50–200.
- Being steered away from the price list towards a 'special' or 'VIP' room.
Safe places to start
If you're unsure, start with a well-known chain or a traditional school: Health Land, Let's Relax, Asia Herb Association, or Wat Pho, the birthplace of Thai massage. Day spas and hotel spas are also a safe choice. Everything in our directory is chosen to be a genuine massage place.
Make it clear
It's perfectly normal to point at the menu and ask for a specific treatment, for example a one-hour Thai massage. A professional therapist will simply get on with it.
