Wat Pho Massage: A Guide to Thai Massage at Its Birthplace
Updated
Wat Pho, home of the giant Reclining Buddha, is considered the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. The temple has taught massage and traditional medicine for generations, and its school is still one of the most respected in Thailand. Getting a massage here is one of the most authentic things you can do in Bangkok.
Where to get a massage at Wat Pho
Massages are given in open-air pavilions inside the temple grounds by therapists trained at the Wat Pho school. You can choose Thai massage or foot massage, usually in 30- or 60-minute sessions.
How it works
- Pay the temple entrance fee, then head to the massage pavilions.
- Pay at the counter and take a queue number — at busy times expect to wait.
- Go early in the day or on weekdays to avoid the longest queues.
Getting there
The easiest way is MRT Sanam Chai on the Blue Line, a short walk from the temple. You can also take the Chao Phraya Express boat to Tha Tien pier.
Learn Thai massage
The Wat Pho Thai Traditional Medical and Massage School also runs courses for beginners and professionals if you want to learn the technique yourself.
